Section II > Kidney Disease
Kidney Disease
SIGNS
Your cat or dog is drinking more water and urinating more often. Your pet may be losing weight, specifically loss of muscle mass, as the kidneys lose protein. As kidney failure advances, your pet may become weak due to anemia. He may have a decreased appetite due to a buildup of toxins in the blood stream. In advanced cases, he will be dehydrated and completely off food. In some pets, kidney disease causes elevated blood pressure, which may affect his eyesight.
CAUSES
The kidneys filter blood in the body. They remove waste products (urea and creatinine), retain essential nutrients (potassium), maintain hydration by retaining water, produce a hormone to stimulate red blood cell production, and produce urine. Most cases of kidney failure are due to the kidney shutting down for no specific reason (idiopathic). In other cases the cause may be due to genetic disease (kidney cysts often found in Persians cats), infections (severe bacterial kidney infections), and toxins (such as antifreeze). There are no signs of kidney failure until 70% of the kidneys are no longer functional.
SOLUTIONS
SEE YOUR VETERINARIAN. If your pet is showing any of the above symptoms, have your pet's blood and urine tested. In some cases, an ultrasound may be needed to confirm the disease.
FLUID, FLUID, FLUID. The most important thing that you can do for your pet with renal failure is to maintain adequate hydration. Offer lots of fresh water. If your cat isn't a great water drinker, then make the switch to canned food.
LOWER PROTEIN AND PHOSPHORUS LEVELS. Newer research has shown that the most important thing to restrict in early kidney failure is phosphorus. This mineral speeds up destruction of the remaining kidney cells. Stop all dairy products as they are very high in phosphorus. Feed a specific, moderately reduced protein diet, such as a premium quality senior diet, in the early stages. As kidney failure advances, switch to a restricted protein diet, available from your veterinarian. Here is a sample homemade low-protein, low-phosphorus diet:
| Canine Low Protein Diet |
| Cooked Rice |
3 cups |
| Hard Boiled Eggs |
2 Large eggs |
| or Canned Tuna |
1/2 Can |
| Fish Oil |
1 tablespoon |
| Calcium Carbonate (Tums) |
1/2 teaspoon |
| Potassium Chloride (light salt) |
1 teaspoon |
| One-a-day multivitamin |
1 tablet |
| Ground Flax |
2 teaspoons |
Mix all ingredients together and warm prior to feeding. This is enough to feed a 40 lb dog once daily. |
| Feline Low-Protein Diet |
| Cooked Rice or Cooked Macaroni |
2 cups |
| Canned Tuna |
1 cup |
| Fish Oil |
3 tablespoons |
| Calcium carbonate or Tums |
1 teaspoon |
| One-a-day multivitamin |
1/2 tablet |
| Potassium chloride (light salt) |
1/3 teaspoon |
Mash together all ingredients well. Slightly heat to make it more palatable. This is enough to feed a 10lb cat for 3 days. Feed 1/3 (1 cup) once daily. |
OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS. The omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids from fish oil are shown to delay the progression of kidney failure. The dose is one 250mg capsule per 10 lbs of body weight daily.
B VITAMINS. In my experience, cats and dogs with kidney disease appear to feel better when taking B Vitamins. There is a loss of these water-soluble vitamins in the urine. The Vitamin B dose is 1/4 tablet per 10 lbs of body weight daily.
REHMANNIA 8. This is a Chinese Medicine herbal formula that has shown great results for treating pets with chronic renal failure. The Chinese name is Shen Qi Wan. To ensure that it is the proper formula, it should contain Fu Zi and Rou Gui. These two herbs will reignite the flame of the kidneys. A suggested starting dose is 1/4 teaspoon per 10 lbs of body weight given once daily.
ADD SOME TUMS. Many pets with chronic kidney failure get high phosphorus levels, which can cause a whole host of problems, making your pet feel even worse. A safe, effective treatment is to add Calcium carbonate found in Tums. The dose is 1/4 tab (650mg) per 10 lbs if body weight twice daily.
BROMELAIN. Bromelain has been shown to reduce inflammation and disease progression in certain cases of kidney failure. The Bromelain dose is 100mg per 10 lbs twice daily.
ASTRAGALUS. This is a supplement that can be used in conjunction with the Chinese herbal combination Rehmannia. The dose is 1 drop per lb twice daily of the tincture.
